My Favourite Rock Scenes in Films

Rocktober 2013 // Dutch Girl in London

Last month I shared some of my favourite music scenes in films with you and asked you what YOUR favourite music scenes were. I had lots of responses on social media relating to this and the post proved to be very popular indeed and definitely deserved a follow-up.

As I am a big fan of rock music and am always delighted to hear a rock or metal tune I know in a film, I decided to this time share with you some of my favourite ROCK music scenes in films! For the ultimate experience I suggest you turn up your speaker to 11 🙂

1. Cannibal Corpse in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994)

I thought this was a brilliant film and have seen it many many times over the years. One of my favourite scenes in the film is when Ace Ventura walks into a bar during a Cannibal Corpse (American death metal band) gig and asks someone in the crowd a question. He takes his answer for a “yes” while it’s clear that the guy is just head banging to the music 🙂

2. Dio and Meatloaf in the intro of Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny (2006)

Another hilarious film in this list with lots of silly jokes and even more rock music. The intro is fantastic and features Meatloaf and a brilliant mini Jack Black. The best moment however is the appearance of rock legend Dio at about 2m35!

3. Mickey Rourke dances to Ratt in The Wrestler (2008)

Absolutely one of the best films in recent years! I was never a fan of Mickey Rourke, but that changed after this film. In this light, fun scene we see Mickey Rourke and Marisa Tomei singing and dancing to “Round and Round” by American 80s rock band Ratt. Do you agree with their discussion about 80s vs 90s music at the end?

4. Steve Vai & KISS in Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey (1991)

Before Keanu Reeves became Neo, he was a grunge-loving teenager who went time travelling with his best friend Bill. At the end of their Bogus Journey they perform “God Gave Rock ‘N’ Roll To You II” (by Steve Vai & KISS who covered it from Argent). I admit that I first heard this song in the film and it wasn’t till many years later that I found out who the actual performers were (I did know it wasn’t Keanu Reeves though!).

5. “Zero Signal” by Fear Factory in Mortal Kombat (1995)

1995 was a fantastic year for rock album releases. Some of my favourite albums were released that year including King for a Day… Fool for a Lifetime by Faith No More, Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill and One Hot Minute by Red Hot Chili Peppers, but most of all that year marked the release of Fear Factory‘s (American industrial metal band) seminal album Demanufacture. I was absolutely addicted to that album and I think I’ve seen the band play live about twenty times over the years, including all the way in Vancouver, Canada!

I saw Mortal Kombat on a romantic cinema date and got super excited when I realised they used a music clip from Fear Factory’s “Zero Signal” during the Johnny Cage vs Scorpion fight (scroll up to 1m35 to hear the song). Unfortunately the sound in this clip isn’t the best, but you could watch this fan-made mash up of the film and live footage here instead.

I’d love to hear what YOUR favourite music scenes are so do share them with me either in a comment below or via social media!
