For this website I tend to only suggest things I have done or experienced myself. But as I live in London, I don’t stay over in hotels here. The following suggestions are all made by friends and family who have visited me over the last 1.5 years. And as I live in East London, these hotels and apartments are situated mostly in this area. But it’s a great location which gets you into the West End fast and easy so actually a perfect London base. Especially because you then can easily meet up with me for a walking tour! Click on the page Tours for more information. (Note: tours only in Dutch.)
Hotels
Travelodge Bethnal Green: 231- 237 Cambridge Heath Road, London, E2 0EL
In all honesty I have to say that booking through the website isn’t fun and in case of a cancellation or any problems, Travelodge is quite an awful company to deal with. But once you arrive at Travelodge Bethnal Green the fun and super friendly staff will welcome you with open arms and make your stay as perfect as possible. I have had many friends and relatives stay here over the last year and everybody raves about its perfect location, excellent breakfast buffet, but most of all the incredible staff who are fun and very helpful. Travelodge Bethnal Green only opened in February 2013 so the rooms are still clean and fresh. Expect no frills as this is a budget hotel. When you book well ahead of time, you can book a 2-person room for just £34 a night! Perfect location as the Bethnal Green tube station is only 2 minutes walking from the hotel. On the Central Line it’s only 15 minutes to the West End.
The RE Shoreditch: 419-437 Hackney Road, London, E2 8PP
Decent city hotel with nice clean rooms. Situated near Broadway Market, one of the nicest streets in East London. Go to the Farmer’s Market on Broadway Market on Saturday and have your Sunday roast at The Dove pub there. The hotel is also near the huge Victoria Park where you can have your picnic in summer. Or take a stroll along Regent’s Canal which is also near the hotel (and by the park).
The nearest tube station is Bethnal Green tube station from where you can take the Central Line. The tube station is about 15 minutes from the hotel. Other public transport options from the hotel are the bus or overground (Cambridge Heath Station).
The Whitechapel Hotel: 49-53 New Road, Whitechapel, London, E1 1HH
Decent city hotel near Brick Lane, one of the trendiest streets in London. Have a look at my pages under the header Experience London as a local to discover the best restaurants and shops in this area. Most of my tips are for this area! And if you are Dutch, do not miss out on a tour in this area with me! Find all tour info on the Tours page.
The hotel is near Liverpool Street Station from which you can take various tube or train lines. Very convenient location to explore London!
Town Hall Hotel: Patriot Square, London, E2 9NF
Previously a town hall, now a luxurious hotel. Stay here for a romantic London trip and indulge in luxury. This hotel doesn’t come cheap, but you will get an enormous room in return. As many buildings in East London, this hotel is often used for film and photo shoots. Big films as Atonement and Snatch have been filmed here. Stay here, and feel like a movie star yourself! Treat yourself on an exceptional and affordable meal in the bistro upstairs, Corner Room.
The hotel is 5 minutes away from Bethnal Green tube station where you can take the Central Line into town.
ACE Hotel London Shoreditch: 100 Shoreditch High Street, London, E1 6JQ
Newly opened and incredibly popular and trendy hotel that is located in the heart of hipster Shoreditch. Perfectly located in the midst of independent galleries, boutiques, pubs, restaurants and music venues. From here you can walk up to Liverpool Street Station where you can take of the many tube lines to explore more of London or take a train to other parts of England. In the hotel you can grab a coffee in the popular cafe or have a meal in the English modernist brasserie Hoi Polloi.
Hoxton Hotel Shoreditch: 81 Great Eastern Street, London, EC2A 3HU
This stylish hotel is a prominent destination in Shoreditch as the open and welcoming bar is very popular with locals. This hotel is located in the heart of Shoreditch which is the trendy part of East London. Have a drink in the hotel, order a meal from the grill and just explore the streets around the hotel. Plenty of boutiques and independent shops around here, lots of pubs, cafes and restaurants and some incredible street art!
Apartments
The Modern House apartment: Voss Street, London, E2 6HP.
Amazing apartment by award-winner designer Nina Tolstrop. The apartments holds 5 people so if you are coming to London with a group of people, it might be more fun and cheaper to stay in an apartment instead of a hotel.
London Apartments Voss Street: 7 Voss Street, London, E2 6HP.
More apartments on Voss Street, but these have a more basic interior compared to the one above. Decent, basic and spacious apartments. The organisations rents out various apartments on Voss Street and each one can hold different numbers of people. Again, if you are visiting London with a group of people it is definitely worth looking into renting an apartment.
AirBnB: fantastic website that lists apartments or even just rooms that are rented out by individuals. I have used this website to find apartments in different countries and only have good experiences. Rates are much lower than hotels and you can find many homes that will offer you the same comforts as in your home.

Shoreditch Inn on Austin St just behind Shoreditch Church. I put my mom there because she doesn’t approve of my hygiene standards. Basic public spaces but big comfortable rooms and cheap for Shoreditch. Recently checked for a friend arriving from Amsterdam and it was £89 a night for a double room on a week’s notice.
Hi Alice, thanks for sharing this tip here!
What about Airbnb, you can experience living London as a local.
I did list Airbnb! It’s the last entry on this page 🙂
